To CD or not to CD?

All day I've been thinking about what we're going to do for music at our ceremony...

A long while back I started researching our options, chatted with a cellist about playing at the ceremony, and also discussed the possibility of having a cellist / flutist duo. I got some info, listened to some demo's, and basically put it on the back burner.

Now, only 10 weeks until the wedding, it occured to me -- what the heck are we doing for music at our ceremony?? We're having an outdoor ceremony, so an organist / pianist is out of the question and the major decision now is "live" or "CD." Supposedly there's an electrical outlet in the gazebo, so we could bring a stereo and play a CD, but I just can't picture it. I mean, what happens? Does someone press stop and start, and hope everything goes okay? That just sounds like goof-up waiting to happen! On the other hand, we're getting a little late to find a live ensemble and they can get pretty pricey.

So, I'm back to where I started, looking into classical ensembles and listening to snippets of Pachelbel's "Canon in D" and Bach's "Air on the G String" -- I must admit, they're quite nice and I could definitely see myself walking down the aisle to one of those tunes. But then again, I'd also be happy walking down the aisle to "Ramble On" by Led Zeppelin -- man, I LOVE that tune! -- so yeah, to CD or not to CD, that's the question ;-)

  • you know what, you can do whatever you want. My sister and her husband spoke with the minister and got the organist to do "Everything I do, I do it for you" as they were exiting the church. It was hard to recognize and with all the hubub of the day I didn't notice it but they did. Honestly - it's going to fly by and you have so many choices. I wouldn't stress too much.

Have you picked the first song you are going to dance to yet?

  • Yeah... I'm not so worried about what songs to play at the ceremony, it's more the logistics of "do we hire a string ensemble or just play a CD?" I can't quite wrap my head around the logistics of playing a CD -- like who starts and stops the stereo??

As for our first dance song, we're working on that one, too. There are a few I like, but none of them have that much meaning to us, so we're still keeping an ear out for something good ;-)

  • A string quartet will be a bit of a costly endeavour. I'd really think long and hard if that's what you want to do.

A cd is easier but you do have to have someone who will be in charge of playing it. Tough choices.

I know what artist James and I will pick for our first dance. We're going to go with Ella Fitzgerald. Got the "Ella for Lovers" cd and it's awesome for a nice romantic dinner and it really sets a great mood to just be together and enjoy each other. Have you heard of her before?

  • Yeah, I like "At Last" by Ella Fitzgerald, but again... it doesn't have any actual significance for Jeff and I -- sounds like it would be great for you and James though!

As for hiring a string ensemble, we've been doing lots of research and they are a bit expensive, but they sound so darn nice! I'm trying to find a wedding CD that has the songs I like (so we can test them out on our uber ghetto "ghetto" at the park), but so far, not much luck...

I think if we actually had a home computer and a CD burner, the CD option would seem a lot less difficult, but right now we're kind of limited to what we can find on a real CD :P

  • Well I tell you what, tell me and James what you need and we'll try and get it together for you! I mean - what are friends for!!!!
